Terrain: Ranges from 2,600 ft. to over 8,000 ft. on adjoining Los Padres National Forest. 137 miles of OHV Trails and roads in Hungry Valley's 19,000 acres and over 150 miles of National Forest OHV routes pass through high desert, rolling hills, arroyos, scrubland and steep pine-forested mountains. 4-Wheel Drive Obstacle Course and an under 60cc fenced jumior rider play area open to the public. Motocross Track by permit only to promoters and organized clubs. 10 developed camp areas, 150 campsites with shade ramadas, fire rings, picnic tables and primitive toilets. No water. M A R Y L A N D Assateague Island National Seashore - Beach driving is allowed. There is a fee of $60.00 per vehicle per year and you are required to have at least a factory jack, a board large enough to support it, a chain, rope or cable 15 ft. long, and a low pressure tire gauge. As well as your vehicle must be licensed, inspected etc. to your states regulations. Upon entering the park you will have to purchase a park pass that allows you access for 7 days. Kalmus Beach: located on the Lewis Bay at the end of Ocean Street in Hyannis. Kalmus is a popular location for windsurfing.
Sandy Neck Beach: located on the Cape's Bay side in West Barnstable. Large dunes and a six-mile sand spit may be found here. Kids love to play in the many shallow pools that form here at low tide. Sandy Neck offers showers and a snack bar.

Near Cape Cod Massachusetts — You can legally drive the beach on Chappaquiddick (the little island next to Martha's Vinyard) for a fee (I think it's $20 or $40 ) I'm unsure of the equipment required but tow hooks and ample clearance are a typical good measure. The beach is fairly isolated off season and there can be serious surf during the right weather. This location also provides for excellent surf fishing for striped bass and Bluefish - even brown sharks. You might recall the story of Ted Kennedy driving the car off the bridge? Well, they've recently rebuilt that bridge and you drive over that to get out to the beach. From the ferry to Martha's Vinyard you drive to Edgartown and board the "On-Time" ferry (3 cars) to get to Chappy. There, you follow the Chappaquiddick road to Dike Road and you'll run right to the bridge and the hut where you purchase your permit. Just in case you are unfamiliar with Martha's Vinyard, it is an island off of the south shore of Cape Cod Massachusetts. Happy Driving. Thanks Rick H.

M I C H I G A N Silver Lake - I can tell you that its a pretty sweet place and anticipate a long wait especially on holidays. I arrived at 6 am and had a 3 plus hour wait after the gates opened. Is really crowded, so be prepared for anything. Since it is a state park, all the state park rules apply. For sure you won't want to leave even if you have mishaps. Literally, you won't want to leave, you may not get back in. Honestly, I think it's way over crowded and as a suggestion if you aren't big on sand, it's not a place for you. The terrain is ALL sand and hills. The season opening is on Memorial Day weekend. (This web sight rocks! Keep up the good work.) Thanks for your help Joe in Battle Creek, MI.

Mengel Pass Trail - The Mengel Pass Trail is the only remaining open trail that traverses the Panamint Range in Death Valley National Park. It features remains of old gold and talc mines, the Barker Ranch where Charles Manson was captured, beautiful desert vistas, and the fantastic twisting Goler Canyon. The trail had a difficulty rating of 2 1/2 when we ran it two years. The storms of 2005 have definitely changed the trail. Mengel Pass is rockier and the 2 rock waterfalls in Goler Canyon have grown to 3 difficult ones. Just before the mouth of the canyon is a huge rock which you have to climb over and this provved to be the most difficult obstacle. It is a long trail, 50 miles of dirt, but also one of the best trails in Death Valley (a scenic 10). See below for the recent pictures.

CURRITUCK, NC - Currituck County Beach Regulations - Vehicle & ATV beach travel is allowed on Currituck County north beaches year round, only in specified areas. Driving permitted after the paved road ends heading north through Corolla. (Safety Kit required)
NAGS HEAD, NC - REGULATIONS GOVERNING OFF-ROAD VEHICLES
If you wish to apply for a Beach Driving Permit, permitted in the Town of Nags Head between October 1st and April 30th, you will need to follow the Application Procedure. The general rules of Beach Driving are numerically listed in the Beach Driving Regulations booklet attached below for quick reference. Other Town Ordinances are also included for your reference. Also attached below is a link to Beach Driving Maps.
The Marine Fisheries Commission has proclaimed it unlawful to use seines from Wednesday through Saturday of the week of the Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament held during October of each year the week prior to Columbus Day and November 1 through December 15 of each year, from Gulfstream Street northward to Eighth Street at the north town limit of Nags Head. It is also unlawful to use commercial fishing gear within 750 feet of fishing piers open to the public. Each year Marine Fisheries issues a chart entitled North Carolina Recreational Guide for Fishermen. This guide lists the most current lengths and creel limits for various species of fish. Please familiarize yourself with this guide. They are available at most tackle shops.
Please understand that driving an off-road vehicle on the beaches of Nags Head is a privilege. The Town has made every effort to accommodate four-wheel drive vehicles on the beach. At the same time, in order to ensure your safety, the safety of pedestrians, and the protection of the beaches, the Town must enforce certain regulations with respect to beach driving privileges.
These rules are as follows:
Application Procedure
Applications for permits will be taken from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday in the Municipal Complex at 5401 S. Croatan Highway. Additionally, Town-designated tackle shops will also distribute applications and permits during their normal business hours. These tackle shops are: Fishing Unlimited, Whalebone Tackle, T.I.’s Bait and Tackle, and T.W.’s Bait and Tackle.
When applying for the permit, please have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license, current registration, and the exact change or a check in the amount of $25.00. Beach drivers must comply with all local regulations having to do with licensing, registration, inspection and insurance before a permit will be issued.

Driving on beaches at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is strictly prohibited. ORV accesses to beaches are open to vehicles by designated ramps only. Both contain a large amount of open or semi-open land, along with the lake and views of the Smoky mountains in the distance, the openess makes it different from your usual heavy woods trail run in this part of the country, nothing challenging just mostly rolling terrain.
Directions: Take highway 411 from Knoxville through Maryville, roughly 30 miles from Knoxville. Wears Bend is located at the last turn of the right before you get to the bridge over the lake going into Vonore, take the road(East Tellico parkway)about a little over a mile to a turnoff on the left leading to a boat ramp and back to a cemetary, just past the boat ramp is a dirt road on the left to access the trails. To reach Ft. Loudan park continue on 411 over the bridge into Vonore, there are signs turn to the left and follow the signs a short distance to the park entrance on the left.
Miscellaneous Information: Wears Bend is the larger of the two areas and most undeveloped, about 15+ miles of trail and old road. The area is a WMA so hunting is allowed in season. Ft. Loudan historic state park is a small area with 4 miles of marked and signed trail plus other pathways and ways through the fields, the most scenic of the two areas if also the most developed, trails in excellent shape, Wears Bend can have some muddy areas after a rain. White Oak Flats; upper Tellico: Bald River Falls, Big Junction, and Santeelah plus various maps are available from the Cherokee National Forest Also see Cherokee National Forest and GORP info on Cherokee National Forest and Monroe County.
Access: The Cherokee National Forest lies along the western slopes of the Appalachians in East Tennessee. The Forest Service roads are gravel and dirt and are open to bicycles -- even the gated gravel roads. Most roads are graded, but there are some designated "off-road vehicle/4WD" roads that are rougher and steeper. There are a few single-track trails open to bicycles, but bicycles are not permitted on hiking trails. Check with the Forest Service office (423-476-9700) for current access restrictions.
The trails described here are along Citico Creek and the upper Tellico River. It's not easy to get there from here, so look at the locator map.
Description: Citico Creek and the Tellico are clear mountain streams running through hemlocks and rhododendron. The gravel Citico Creek Road (Forest Service Road FR 35) climbs gently from Citico Beach (815') as it follows the creek 12 miles toward Indian Boundary Camp Ground (1800'). See Citico map or 3-D map (230K). There is also a flat 3.3 mile gravel path around Indian Boundary Lake.
The upper Tellico (see Tellico map ) has several gravel Forest Service roads and an off-road vehicle area on the North Carlolina side. From its junction with TN 165 (Cherohala Skyway), the Tellico River road runs 17 miles along the river and is paved all the way to NC state line. OFFROADN' MAP

Eisenhower State Park - 423.1 acres, is located in Grayson County, northwest of Denison on the shores of Lake Texoma. It was acquired in 1954 by a Department of Army lease, which extends until 2004, and was opened to the public in 1958.
History: The park was named for the 34th U.S. president, Dwight David Eisenhower, as he was born nearby. In the early 1830s, the area became increasingly important to Anglo settlers, particularly as a route to Texas and the American southwest. Some of the things which add to the history of the area are the American Indian; Butterfield Overland stage routes; Chisholm and Shawnee cattle drive trails; Fort Johnson, established in the area in 1840; and Colbert's Crossing, established on the Red River in 1853 and operated until 1931.
Activities: Some of the activities include picnicking, hiking,biking, nature study, fishing, boating and boat rentals, water skiing, swimming, and wildlife observation, and a variety of camping.
Tours/Programs: Nature/environmental programs are frequently scheduled throughout the year and upon special request with enough lead time. There is a small amphitheater available for group use.
Facilities: Facilities provided include restrooms with and without showers; picnic sites; 3 playground areas; campsites with water only (premium sites are available); campsites with water and electricity (special rates are available); pull-through campsites with water, sewer, and electricity(special rates are available); screened shelters; overflow camping area; recreation hall (day or overnight use, air-conditioning/heating, restrooms, and a kitchen); a campground pavilion; a group camp including water and electric campsites and a campground pavilion; trailer dump stations; a fish-cleaning facility; a launching ramp; a courtesy boat dock; a lighted fishing pier; Eisenhower Yacht Club, a privately-leased marina with boat pump-out station and boat rentals, and a Texas State Park Store. There is a mini-bike area of 10 acres (ATVs allowed) and 4.5-miles or trails. The first .5 mile nature trail is signed for identifying items along the trail and is restricted to foot traffic. The remaining 4 miles (8 miles round-trip) is open to hikers and bikers (non-motorized). Of the 4 miles open to mountain bikes, about 2 miles would be for beginners, and the other 2 miles is rather challenging with steep grades and rock (intermediate).
Directions: The park may be reached by taking U.S. Highway 75 out of Dallas; take Exit #72 to State Highway 91 North to Denison Dam to FM 1310 W and traveling 1.8 miles to Park Road 20 entrance.
Elevation, Weather, and Schedule Information: Elevation: 616'' to 767' Weather: July average maximum 90, January average minimum 32. First/last freeze: November 9/March 27. Wettest months: April and May. Open: 7 days a week, open year round. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Area Attractions: Nearby attractions include Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site (campers can get a free tour); Bonham State Park; Lake Texoma; the Grayson County Frontier Village, a rustic 19th century structure and museum; and the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge with 11,300 acres of land and water known as a haven for migrating and wintering waterfowl.

Padre Island National Seashore - Located near Corpus Christi, TX. South Beach is Open All Year, primitive and at no charge. A camping permit is required and is available from the information desk at the Malaquite Visitor Center. No reservations are accepted; space is always available. Camping is on the beach within 100 feet of the water's edge. There are no designated sites. Campers may choose any location they desire and stake out a claim. The camping area extends from the dunes to the water and from the end of Park Road 22 down 60 miles to the southern boundary of the park at the Mansfield Channel. There are no roads; all driving is on the beach. The first five miles after the end of the park road are open to two-wheel-drive vehicles. The lower 55 miles are open only to four-wheel-drive vehicles. The beginning of the four-wheel-drive area is marked. Please note that in Texas beaches are considered highways and all vehicles on them must be street-legal and licensed. Be aware that driving conditions on the beach may vary with the weather and sometimes areas of soft sand may be found in the two-wheel-drive area making driving difficult and becoming stuck possible. Some areas within the four-wheel-drive area (particularly Little Shell and Big Shell beaches) usually have very deep sand. A site bulletin on how to prepare for driving down island are available by contacting the Visitors Center. Contact the Visitors Center before driving down island to check on beach conditions. Big Bend National Park - One of the largest and least visited of America's national parks. Over 800,000 acres await your exploration and enjoyment. From an elevation of less than 2,000 feet along the Rio Grande to nearly 8,000 feet in the Chisos Mountains, Big Bend includes massive canyons, vast desert expanses, and the entire Chisos Mountain range. Big Bend's backcountry areas provide excellent opportunities for hiking, backpacking, camping, driving unpaved roads, and river running. Permits are required for overnight camping, horse use, and for floating the river. In addition to scenic vistas, abundant wildlife, and diverse geology, an outstanding aspect of Big Bend National Park is its system of unpaved roads. While most visitors will stay on the 112 miles of paved roads in the park, those with a sense of adventure and a high-clearance and/or four-wheel drive vehicle can enjoy over 150 miles of unpaved roads. You are also responsible for protecting and preserving the resources of the park. Stay on the established roadways. Off-road vehicle travel is not allowed. Ground or wood fires and loaded firearms are prohibited. Collecting rocks, plants, animals, artifacts, or any other park resources is illegal. If you camp out in the backcountry, obtain a free backcountry use permit from one of the visitor centers. Finally, remember to lock your vehicle if you are leaving it unattended and secure your valuables. There are three developed campgrounds in the park, located at Rio Grande Village, the Chisos Basin, and Castolon. The Rio Grande Village and Chisos Basin campgrounds provide sewer dump stations and a place to fill your water tank, but none of the three campgrounds offers RV hookups. There are also primitive sites on dirt roads and virtually unlimited backpacking areas. The fee is $10.00 per family vehicle per week, and can be paid at the Maverick Entrance Station, the Persimmon Gap Entrance Station, or the Panther Junction Visitor Center. V I R G I N I A Chincoteague and Assateague Island National Seashore - Beach driving is allowed on these islands. There is a fee of $60.00 per vehicle per year and you are required to have at least a factory jack, a board large enough to support it, a chain, rope or cable 15 ft. long, and a low pressure tire gauge. As well as your vehicle must be licensed, inspected etc. to your states regulations. Upon entering the park you will have to purchase a park pass that allows you access for 7 days. Unless you've been living in a cave somewhere, every avid ATV'er has heard of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System. "Thank you, I guess I've been doing my job" replies Mike Pinkerton, the marketing director for the trail system. For those cave dwellers, the H-M trail system is located in southwest West Virginia's Logan, Mingo, and Boone counties. Developed on corporate-owned property, 400 miles of trail are open. Future plans include 2000 miles of trails connecting several towns in an eight county area throughout the Appalachian Mountains. The trails are multiuse, allowing ATV's, motorcycles, horses, hiking and mountain bikes.More information:
Cost of Permits:
$75 annual, out-of-state (just lowered from $100)
$25 annual, in-state residence
$35 three-seven day permit
$18 one day permit
Plus 6% sales tax
Permits can be purchased online, at the trailheads, or local vendors. Check the website or call 1-800-592-2217.
The trails are on private land and sections can be closed at any time by the owners. You need to check the trail status before arriving.
